Laser Weapon Systems
Electro-Optic / Infrared Countermeasures
Business Development Analyst, Space
“Lasers aren’t science fiction any more… today’s lasers are designed to defend against hostile equipment that conventional weapons can’t handle. Lasers provide some of the most powerful solutions to the urgent, worldwide defense needs posed by these threats. As a proven world leader in laser device, beam control and platform integration, Lockheed Martin is creating the technology and systems to protect citizens, critical military and civilian assets, and deployed forces.”
After graduating from the University of Colorado with a degree in astrophysics, Lynsi built an experimental laser at CU’s Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics. Her work brought her to Bothell, Washington where she was recruited to join the team to build the first high-energy laser prototypes and also design one of the first high-energy laser labs.
“While working as an engineer, I had a strong sense that I would like to be part of shaping the directed energy business, so I joined the Engineering Leadership Development Program. The program opened new doors for me, including earning a master’s degree in systems engineering. As my career path developed and changed, I have also seen the technology sprint ahead in the last five years.”
Today at Lockheed Martin Space, Lynsi is part of a team that has moved toward laser systems that are light and fieldable with incredible, advanced beam control capabilities. Those advances have made it possible to place laser weapon systems on new platforms, such as aircraft or a vehicle like an Army Stryker. In the years ahead, the company is looking at designs and technology that could put lasers in space.
“It definitely isn’t science fiction anymore — it’s a real solution and the future for Lockheed Martin and our customers.”
Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence
There’s no doubt that on the battlefield and at home, autonomy and artificial intelligence (AI) are rapidly becoming part of our daily human experience. We are building AI systems that will keep people in control while enabling them to be safer, and increase mission success in the toughest and most unpredictable of situations.
